Ronald Emory Bowen (F/USA)
Der 1944 geborene, in Paris lebende französisch-amerikanische Maler Bowen hat einen Hintergrund in abstrakter Malerei und klassischer Musik, der ihm eine Sensibilität für die abstrakte und poetische Natur der Realität verleiht. Er beginnt jedes Werk mit einem Foto, das er aufgenommen hat, um zu einem "fotografischen" Ergebnis zu gelangen, das durch diese Sensibilität gefiltert wurde.
Von 1962 bis 1967 studierte er Kunst, Musik und Sprachen an der Florida State University in Tallahassee und absolvierte sein letztes Studienjahr in deren Studienzentrum in Florenz, Italien. Dieser erste Kontakt mit Europa war ein Wendepunkt für ihn.
Nach Abschluss seines Universitätsstudiums unterrichtete er ein Jahr lang Kunst an seiner ehemaligen Schule in Lake Placid. 1968 entschied er sich, nach Europa zurückzukehren, um zu unterrichten und sein Kunststudium fortzusetzen. Er verbrachte einen Sommer in Paris, unterrichtete ein Jahr in einem kleinen Internat in England und war anschließend ein Jahr in Nizza, Frankreich, als Vollzeitstudent für Malerei an der Ecole Nationale d'Art Décoratif eingeschrieben.
1970 kehrte er als "Artist in Residence" der Fondation des Etats-Unis, einem Stipendium der Woolley Foundation, nach Paris zurück. Das Stipendium wurde um ein zweites Jahr verlängert. 1973 begann er, in Teilzeit an der American School of Paris Kunstunterricht zu erteilen. Seitdem ist er in dieser Stadt zu Hause und zog sich 2008 aus dem Schuldienst zurück. Im Jahr 2010 erhielt er den Monique-Corpet-Preis für Malerei der Taylor-Stiftung in Paris. 2018 verlieh ihm die Taylor-Stiftung den Madeleine-Couderc-Malereipreis. 1993 erhielt Ronald Bowen die französische Staatsbürgerschaft, was ihn zum Bürger sowohl der USA als auch Frankreichs macht.
Der Künstler lebt und arbeitet in einem lichtdurchfluteten Atelier am Montmartre, umgeben von tropischen Pflanzen mit Blick auf die Dächer von Paris und die Basilika Sacré Coeur in der Ferne.
Franco American painter, born in 1944, based in Paris, Bowen has a background in abstract painting as well as classical music which gives him a sensitivity to the abstract and poetic nature of reality. He begins each work with a photo he has taken and to arrive at a “photographic” result that has been filtered through this sensitivity.
From 1962 to 1967 he studied art, along with music and languages, at Florida State University in Tallahassee, completing his final year at their study center in Florence, Italy. This first contact with Europe was a turning point for him.
Finished with his university studies, he taught art for a year at his former school in Lake Placid. In 1968 he chose to return to Europe to teach and continue his art studies, spending a summer in Paris, then a year teaching in a small boarding school in England followed by a year in Nice, France, enrolled as a full-time painting student at the Ecole Nationale d'Art Décoratif.
In 1970 he returned to Paris as "Artist in Residence" at the Fondation des Etats-Unis, a scholarship offered by the Woolley Foundation. The scholarship was renewed for a second year. In 1973 he began teaching art classes part-time at the American School of Paris and has since made that city his home, retiring from the school in 2008. In 2010 he was awarded the Monique Corpet Prize for painting from the Taylor Foundation in Paris. in 2018 the Taylor Foundation awarded him the Madeleine Couderc Painting Prize. In 1993 Ronald Bowen received French Nationality, making him a citizen of both the U.S. and France.
The artist lives and works in a light-filled Montmartre studio surrounded with tropical plants overlooking Paris rooftops and the Basilica of Sacré Coeur in the distance.
